In Fifth Grade Religion the focus is on the Seven Sacraments, Mary the Mother of the Church, the Liturgical Year, the Beatitudes, the Nicene Creed, Prayer of St. Francis, Living as Jesus’ Disciples, and Catholic Social Teaching. In Math, the students work to be proficient on their multiplication facts in order to proceed to a higher level of mathematics. They learn to multiply and divide 3-digit numbers, multiply and divide decimals, compare decimals, add and subtract fractions with like and unlike denominators, multiply and divide fractions, plot and graph equations, convert units of measurement, the Metric System, geometry, volume, and solve word problems. The students use Go Math, an online resource to practice and advance their math skills. Our focus in English is on grammar, usage, and mechanics. During writing workshop, students are taught to write personal narratives, informational essays and opinion pieces, poetry and other genres of choice. During reader’s workshop, we read different genres and focus on fluency and comprehension skills. We focus on vocabulary words that apply to the realistic world. All lessons in Math and English are based on the Common Core Math and English Language Arts Standards. In Science we focus on Scientific Methods, the Metric System, Life, Earth, and Physical Science topics. We also learn about the human body system. We do several lab experiments with partners or in cooperative groups. In Social Studies the focus is on Native Americans from North & South America, Explorers, Slave Trade, the 13 Colonies, the American Revolution, Constitution, Congress, and the early years of the United States. The students also learn the fifty states and their capitals. The students research and write a state report and create a display board and a parade float of their state which is displayed during Catholic Schools Week. The students hone their mapping skills, latitude and longitude, primary and secondary sources, and timelines. The students enjoy Spanish once a week and learn how to speak, read, write, sing and pray in Spanish. Emphasis is stressed on researching for reports, creating PowerPoint presentations, creating QR codes, and learning other technology applications in the computer lab. In the library, the students gather books for reports, listen, and learn great literature. The students have P.E. twice a week and play fun games and learn about good sportsmanship.

Fifth Grade is a special year in which students get ready to make the transition between elementary and middle school. Students are taught critical thinking skills and leadership skills that allow them to become knowledge seekers. The students go to the Vista Courthouse for a mock trial, Cabrillo National Park and to Astro Camp, Idyllwild among other field trips that allow the curriculum to become alive.

Success in fifth grade comes from the teacher, the parents and the students working together as a team. I look forward to having the opportunity to teach your son or daughter.
“Success is…knowing your purpose in life, growing to reach your maximum potential, and sowing seeds that benefit others.” –John C. Maxwell
