Welcome To Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic School First Grade

  • Course: First Grade
  • Teacher: Ms. Jessica Hanzche
  • Room Number: 1
  • Time: 7:45am - 2:45pm

In the first grade religious curriculum, the students come to learn about Jesus and his essential role in the Catholic Church in general, and the vital role Jesus has in their lives. It is the beginning of the journey the students will take towards the Sacrament of Reconciliation and Holy Communion.

Expectations are enhanced in first -grade across all academic areas, including the ability to work independently and on task for longer periods of time. Literacy has a bigger block in the students’ day. It begins with a mini-lesson that starts both the reading and writing workshops, with an extended period for students to work independently, then a sharing and closing at the end. The teacher has an opportunity to observe and meet with students during this independent time one on one. Phonics, grammar, and handwriting are essential to the language arts block as well.

In math, the students build on concepts they were introduced to in Kindergarten. Their number sense increases through problem solving skills, increase practice in addition and subtraction, and their knowledge of math vocabulary. They are introduced to time and their knowledge of geometrical shapes extends in more detail to 3d shapes.

The social studies and science curriculums will give them knowledge that will increase their understanding of the issues and the world that surround them. In science, the students learn about the building blocks of life through the life cycles of plants and animals.  They will learn concepts related to the earth, sky, and weather.  Through inquiry and questioning, they will become more environmentally aware of the world around them. In Social studies, the students will learn about different aspects of their world. They will look at the work people do, and what it means to be a responsible citizen. They will look at comparisons of our world from long ago and now; what is the same, different, good and bad. Finally they will be introduced to economics.

In conclusion, the curriculum is enriched with field trips that emphasize and enhance the students’ understanding. Students will come out of first grade aware of the impact God has in every aspect of their life. With that awareness, comes a responsibility to be an active citizen in their communities, and an advocate for all living things.
