My name is Gina Uyeda and I am the 3rd grade teacher at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School. I graduated from California State University, Long Beach with a degree in Social Work, but quickly decided that it wasn't the career path for me. Eventually, I realized my calling was to teach and earned my teaching credential in 2002. I taught first grade for three years before my seven year hiatus as a stay-at-home mom. During this time I earned my Master’s degree in Education from California State University, San Marcos and continued to substitute teach in Catholic schools. When the time was right, God led me to St. Francis where I instantly knew I was meant to teach. Both of my daughters now go to school here, as well. Although I enjoyed my time as a first grade teacher, I love the greater academic challenges of third grade and have thoroughly enjoyed the last two years here at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School.
Third grade at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School is a faith-based, child-centered learning environment where we aim to work hard and have fun doing it. A big focus for us is Jesus’ role in creating the Church, and continuing the work that Jesus began as members of his church. As a school community, we worship at Mass weekly. The structure of our Language Arts curriculum is the Reading Writing Workshop model where students have a choice in what they read and write at their zone of primal development. There is nothing better than seeing a student curled up with a pillow and a great book in the classroom. Of course, Language Arts is infused into every content area, including Social Studies, Science and Religion. Third grade Mathematics is challenging, yet rewarding. Students learn to understand multiplication, division and fractions, to name a few of the important concepts. Our Social Studies curriculum focuses on communities, including geography, Native American communities, changes over time and governments. Energy & matter, light, ecology, and the pattern and movements of the Sun, Moon and stars are our focus in Science.
We go on three field trips in third grade. We One is a literature connection to the performing arts, another supports our learning of the Native Americans in California and the third enhances the science curriculum. Third graders will also write a report on a saint of their choice, work in a small group setting to study one of the early California Native American tribes, and complete two book reports throughout the year. As a part of our school community, we also participate in the annual Christmas Pageant and Performing Arts Night at the end of the year.
